Sherry, you are so right. We've wrestled with that quite a bit & even switched troops to a group that held values much more similar to ours. Though this doesn't change my dismay at being affiliated with BSA but it's hard when the things we don't like about BSA are not prevalent in our small group, making those things harder to explain to our son. Who because of the openness of our specific group and inclusion of female siblings in meetings & such, didn't realize until this video that girls couldn't be in Boy Scouts. This of course led to an entirely different conversation that warrants a blog post all on its own...

I applaud your attitude on this issue, but wonder about your son being allowed to be a member of a group that very openly discriminates against homosexuals.

I also wrote about LEGO today, and have been motivated to write about them a few times this year. I agree completely with what you are saying about LEGO missing the boat on its own toys. As I said, "Maybe if [LEGO] focused instead on creating a few toys that are fun and do not hew to stereotypes, or venturing away from the 'kit' model and back to the freedom and creativity that a box of bricks allows, they’d get a larger female fan base." BTW, I'd love to see the gender breakdown of sales figures for lines like Harry Potter. I bet there is a huge number of female buyers.

Posted commentary very similar to this on my Facebook page today. While I recognize that LEGO would want to tap into a market of people not already engaged with their product lines, they are missing out on an ENORMOUS opportunity by not pursuing the 8 - 12yo girls who would love to have female Mad Scientists, Hermione Grangers / Luna Lovegoods, and actual selection of resilient heroines, etc., in the existing CITY, Heroica, Bionicle product lines. Girls already aspire to be represented in those product lines, LEGO or otherwise. And, as I suggested on Twitter, why not a 'Sisters Grimm' line inspired by the phenomenal range of characters in Michael Buckley's series? There's a wealth of source material, but LEGO isn't seeing the forest for the trees.

Just wanted to say I totally agree with everything you've put in this post. My eldest daughter absolutely loves Lego, every kind of Lego. Although if someone were to give her pink Lego she would say "bleurgh" and not play with it as she completely refuses to play with what she sees as "girly toys". Her current favourite is Star Wars Lego. Now my youngest daughter likes to copy her big sister but she goes in for all the girly princess pink stuff. She asked me for "girly Lego" for Christmas. I've not complied instead I've bought her Harry Potter Lego with Hermone and Ginny figures.
