It’s funny the places we some times find the coolest SheHeroes to look up to. A few years back my kids and I discovered the show American Ninja Warrior. This show is the American version of a Japanese show that pits the toughest athletes against an obstacle course that is almost impossible to tackle. It is a game for not only the strongest athletes but also the most mentally capable and dedicated.
It should be no surprise that the gender balance on show like this is lopsided. But what makes it great is that it is not for lack of trying. Each year we watch women work hard and attempt to complete the course. These women come in all ages from all walks of life. From scientists and engineers, gymnasts to Olympians, homemakers and softball players, teachers to waitresses, and college students to grandmothers; these women all gather to compete and show that they can work just as hard as the men to take on the challenge of American Ninja Warrior.
The stories these women share on the show are as varied as the women themselves and each one has a different inspiring tale to tell. It is a treasure trove of SheHeroic tales that over the last 4 years I have enjoyed watching with my kids.
But none of these strong and amazing women have ever been able to complete the qualifying obstacle course. Ever. Keep in mind that in the years this show has aired on American television, no man has actually even completed the final course! And many many uber athletic men fail the qualifying course as well.
Executive producer Kent Weed told The Hollywood Reporter that the show isn't about winning, "It's the stories of the people that separates us: how people overcome adversity to achieve their goals. Whether they're doing it for a friend who is ill, a mother that had breast cancer or whether it's a personal achievement they're trying to overcome...it's personal human achievement."
But last week a young SheHero, Kacy Catanzaro who has attempted American Ninja Warrior for the last three years, became the first woman to complete the course.
Sometimes we find our SheHeroes in the oddest of places. But when we do they remind us that our bodies and our minds are filled with unlimited capacity to accomplish the most amazing goals.
Watch the video and share with your SheHero, then go accomplish amazing!
